SUN PRAIRIE, WI (May 25, 1998) -- Dan Boorse, Whitefish Bay, scored his second Badger Midget Auto Racing Association A-Main win of the season in dramatic fashion when he flashed his #88 Gaerte powered Stealth to the outside of Randy Koch's (Madison, WI) #2 Brayton / Beast, in turn three during a restart on the 44th lap of the Miller Genuine Draft Memorial Day 50 lap main event at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI, Monday night.

The restart came as the result of a Roger Corrigan, Rockford, IL, turn two flip which brought out the red flag. Corrigan was not injured in the incident.

Boorse, who had passed a lapped car that separated him from the leader, Koch, a lap before the red, planned to pass Koch on the inside during the restart. "When Randy took off really early as we came off of turn two, I totally abandoned my plan to try and pass him on the inside." Boorse said, adding, "I realized that I'd have my momentum up and I just headed for the top. It was a gamble, but it paid off tonight."

Koch, who's car nearly flipped as he drove into turn one on the opening lap of the event, jumped into the lead on a restart on lap 8 when he slid by Marty Davis, Racine and Jerry Coons, Jr. in turn four.

Koch said, "The car was really working pretty well right on the bottom tonight but it's got a bad push up around the cushion." And added, "I knew that Dan would try the pass where he did. I just shouldn't have picked up the throttle when I did, if I would have waited to the cone, he (Boorse) never would have been able to have enough momentum to make the pass."

In BMARA competition, restarts begin on the backstretch at an area designated by a cone. Drivers may not pass other cars before they reach the cone. However, the lead driver may accelerate at any point between turn two and the backstretch starting area.

Aaron Fiscus, Oregon, WI, who fell from the early lead to seventh position by lap thirty, mounted a late charge on the field in his #7 Gaerte / Ellis and powered around Bill Berg, Arlington, WI in turn two of the white flag lap to finish the race in third.

"We have an onboard weight jacker on the car and in the early laps I kept putting more weight on the left rear to tighten the car up so I could go fast on the bottom." Fiscus explained, "When I finally realized that all the fast cars were on top, I loosened the car back up went out there on the cushion … unfortunately, it was to late for us to challenge for the win."

Berg, who earlier in the evening had earned his first career fast qualification and trophy dash win in his Gaerte / Buzzard, commented, "We're getting closer on the setup of this car every week. I had a terrific bite coming off of turn four on almost every lap … in fact, I think I even felt the front wheels come up a couple of times."

The Mike Fell Memorial Trophy Dash win was particularly significant for Berg, who in addition to being a good friend of the late Fell's, now drives for the team that Fell drove for at the time of his fatal crash last summer. In an emotional moment that had the entire crowd of on it's feet, Fell's widow, Megan presented Berg with the trophy for the win.

Boorse will take the season points lead as the leader coming into the night, Boyd Calvert, Mt. Horeb experienced repeated magneto problems in his #23 Fontana / Stealth. Calvert pulled his car off the track on lap 15 of the A-main and finished the event in twenty-first position.

The Badger Midgets will be back in action this Friday night, May 29, at the Hales Corners Speedway, Franklin, WI and will return to Angell Park next Sunday night, May 31.
