Boorse Finds Winning Setup, Wins Third of Year Kevin J. O'Donnell Although the track seemed to deteriorate before the heat races, two distinct grooves developed as the night's racing progressed, which lead to intense side by side racing in the main events. "I really wanted to get the holeshot," said Boorse of the opening lap, "because I knew it would be tough to pass out there tonight." But it was Boyd Calvert (Mt. Horeb, WI) who jumped his #23 Fontana / Stealth into the early lead. A third lap incident involving Racine's Marty Davis in turn one brought out the event's first caution. Calvert continued to hold the top spot until lap four, when Boorse slid beneath him in turn one. The two ran high and low, side by side, exchanging lines several times until Jerry Coons, Jr. (Tucson, AZ), last week's feature winner, slowed on the front stretch with a handling problem which forced the event's second caution. On the ensuing restart, Kevin Doty blasted the #11 Wilke PAK Gaerte / Ellis around the top side in turn three and four, his momentum carrying him past Kevin Koch's (Cottage Grove, WI) Gaerte / Beast and into third place. While Calvert continued to chase Boorse, Doty and Koch picked up a spirited battle for the third position, with Doty running extremely close to the wall and Koch sticking to the bottom like glue. Calvert made his last serious challenge to Boorse on lap 12 when he slid beneath the leader in turn one. However, Calvert couldn't gain enough bite off turn two to hold the position. Five laps later Doty lost speed when he banged the cushion in turn one, which was enough for Koch to get by along the guardrail and set his sights on Calvert. Koch edged past Calvert for second place as the white flag came out. At the checkered it was Boorse, Koch, Calvert, Doty and defending BMARA champ Kevin Olson (Machesney Park, IL) Koch, who has struggled so far this season, commented, "The car was pretty tight, which allowed me to stay on the bottom, and that's right where I wanted to be I had checked out both lines and I definitely felt more comfortable on the rail tonight." Then added, "This team has just been awesome through the bad luck that we've had I think we've got this thing turned around." "I trust Dan," said Calvert, of his battle with Boorse, "He's a good clean racer who is really fun to race hard with." In other action during the night, Davis made a last lap pass on Donnie Lehman on the last lap of the B-main. The drivers had run side by side throughout much of the event. BMARA is set to go again this Sunday night for the Snap-On Tools / Flag Day 25 at Angell Park Speedway. xxx
