Doty's Prairie Finish is
Picture Perfect

SUN PRAIRIE, WI (July 12, 1998) -- A
photo finish forced Badger Midget Auto Racing Association Officials to review a video tape
for several minutes before declaring Kevin Doty the winner of the Wentworth Motors -
Oldtimers 25 at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI, Sunday night. Doty edged out
Roger Corrigan for the win.
Doty, Burlington, Iowa trailed Corrigan, Loves
Park, IL by nearly five car lengths with two laps to go but closed the gap in turns one
and two of the white flag lap. Doty came off of turn two riding the rear nerf bar of
Corrigan. The pair raced that way down the backstretch and as they entered turn three,
Corrigan remained on the outside groove, while Doty dove for the bottom. As Corrigan moved
in slightly to protect his line his car to moved into a slick area of the track. Doty and
Corrigan came off the fourth turn side by side and raced each other to the checkered.
"I got close enough there that I think he
(Corrigan) saw my nose." Doty said from victory lane. "In between three and
four, he brought it down from where he was running, and I think that was his mistake, I
think if he would have stayed running where he had been, I doubt very much that I would've
gotten by him. He got right in the middle where it was on the slick stuff."
Doty, who had run the high groove all night
said, "I didn't know if my car would stick down low or not, but it was one of those
deals, last lap, where you've got to try it. We tried it, and it worked."
The win was Doty's first of the 1998 season in
the Wilke PAK Gaerte / Ellis midget.
Corrigan, who had passed Doty for the lead on a lap one restart and led every lap but the
last, had a difficult time holding back his dissapointment. "You gotta run hard on
the 24th lap, just like lap number one." Corrigan said. "The car was just
awesome tonight, Kurt Gunderson had this thing right on."
Kevin Olson, Machesney Park, IL passed Chris
Maxson on a re-start on lap 8 after a yellow flag that came out when BMARA points leader,
Dan Boorse, Whitefish Bay, WI lost power in his Gaerte / Stealth. Olson challenged Doty
for second several times throughout the event.
"We got quicker as the race went on, and
I was hoping that over the last few laps we might get in a position to get them both on
the bottom." Olson explained. "I kind of got by Doty, and it showed him my
track, and then he got away and did what I wanted to do, but we had a pretty good run,
we're happy with it."
"The track was really tacky on the
bottom." Olson added. "You really had to trust your car to drive it in there
hard."
Olson's third place finish put him solidly
back into third place in the BMARA points standings.
Earlier in the evening, during the trophy
dash, Randy Koch jumped a wheel, which sent his Brayton / Beast flipping violently down
the backstretch. Although Koch was awake and alert after the accident, he was removed from
the car with a back-brace and transported to the hospital where he underwent a series of
cat-scans and X-rays. All of which reportedly came back negative. Koch was released at
midnight.
The Badger midgets will race again, this
Sunday night at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie for the Pizza Hut Family Night 25.
NOTES:
It's a Rolls Canardly: It's a Rolls Canardly: Among the
cars in the pits at Angell Park Speedway that had to scratch before turning a competitive
lap were the 76 of Marty Davis, the 96 of Dean Billings and the car driven by Mike
Bymaster.
Tough Joint: Tough Joint: For the second
consecutive week, just 11 cars of the original 22 saw the checkered flag.
Goin' Green: Goin' Green: The green #76
driven by Australian Adam Clarke and owned by Californian Joe Fontana is undergoing
extensive repairs after Clarke took a nasty ride in the A-feature on Friday night at the
Wolverine Nationals at Kokomo Indiana. Clarke had qualified for the event by finishing
third behind Dan Boorse and IRL car owner, Fred Treadway's son, Rick Treadway. The all
Australian team is expected to make their return next Sunday night and confirmed last
night that they will stay in the U.S. through the Belleville Midget Nationals.
Same Old, Same Old: Same Old, Same Old: Although it
has been reported that the Wilke PAK has made a chassis switch from Ellis to Stealth, the
car that Kevin Doty drove to victory last night was indeed one of the team's two Ellis
cars. They do, however, have a brand new Stealth frame back at their garage.
