Boorse Masters Dry-Slick Prairie Track Kevin J. O'Donnell SUN PRAIRIE, WI (July 19, 1998) -- Dan Boorse passed Boyd Calvert on the second lap and held off the late race challenges of Jerry Coons, Jr. to win the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association, Pizza Hut of Sun Prairie, 25-lap A-feature at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Sunday night. The win is Boorse's fifth A-feature win in BMARA competition this season. Boorse, Whitefish Bay, WI, the current BMARA points leader, started outside the second row and used the outside line to pass Calvert, Mt Horeb, WI, on a lap one re-start. Eight laps later, Coons, Jr., Tuscon, AZ, who started from the pole position, overtook Calvert for second. Coons tried repeatedly to pass Boorse on the outside of turns one and two, but each time seemed to struggle for traction coming off the turn. Boorse and Coons weaved their way through lapped traffic for the last 8 laps of the race. "I knew he (Calvert) was going to go to the bottom because that's where he was running before." Boorse said from victory lane. "We were working pretty good and the top wasn't that rough in the beginning of the race so I thought I'd give it a shot and kept my momentum up and got a good run off of four. Luckily I got him into turn one and drag raced him off of turn two and got the lead coming through turn three." Boorse ran the outside line until mid race, when Coons, Jr. showed him a wheel going into turn two. "I didn't feel like I was getting through turns one and two as quick as I could have. I was searching for a quicker way. Especially when I saw the white #4 (Coons, JR.) car come in behind me." Boorse said. "It felt pretty good in one and two right on the bottom. There was a little rubber coming off of the groove so finally I jumped up there so I could catch some of that rubber coming out of two." Coons, Jr., who is currently in seventh in the USAC National Midget Series points standings, and has won twice at Angell Park this season, started on the pole and was passed for the lead on the opening lap by Calvert and Boorse. Coons, Jr. said, "I think they might have just had the run on the outside and kept their momentum up where I kind of slowed down to keep it on the inside. They might have just had the momentum run on me." Coons Jr. added, "I think we were every bit as fast as Dan, it's just he had his stronger points than I did and I'd catch him down in three and four, but I couldn't keep up with him off of two." Calvert said he figured the top would be the place to pass but that he wanted to try the bottom. "On the start, after I passed Jerry on the outside, I went down low and it worked really good so I figured since it was working, I'd stay with it. Unfortunately, it didn't work good enough. We really needed this win tonight." Dean Billings, after recording his best run of the season at Angell Park by finishing fourth said, "We started up front, but so did the guys who won the race. It was good racing. I could see the leaders the whole time and I was hoping to catch Calvert. Overall it was a good run." Jason Leffler, who is currently second overall in the USAC National Midget points series, substituted for Randy Koch in the #2 / Brayton / Beast of Harlan Kittleson, and set quick time for the night. Leffler finished the A-feature in eighth. Leffler also announced that he has recently signed a contract with Firestone and Treadway racing to do tire testing and developmental work for the two in an Indy Racing League car.
