Hatton Rides Hyde on Jeckle Prairie Track
Kevin J. O'Donnell
SUN PRAIRIE, WI (July 26, 1998) -- Scott Hatton
plowed through the bumps on a heavy, physical track to win his second feature of the year
in Badger Midget Auto Racing Association competition at Angell Park Speedway in Sun
Prairie, Sunday night.
Hatton, Roscoe, IL who started outside the second row
collided with pole sitter Randy Koch, Monona, WI as the field took the green. During the
incident Hatton lost several positions. Three laps later, Hatton slid beneath Randy Koch
to move into second. On lap six, Hatton drove beneath Chris Maxson, McHenrey, IL in turn
one. The two raced side by side through the corner before Hatton pulled ahead going down
the back stretch.
"I watched him through the first couple of laps."
Hatton said from victory lane. "It looked like he was popping the front end off (the
ground). I figured I was catching him down low so I'll just stay there. As soon as I got
next to him he popped the front end again and I went by him."
Hatton further commented on the difficulty that the rough
track presented to the drivers " It was so rough coming out of four
it would
throw the whole front end up in the air
there's a few times I almost hit the front
stretch wall because of it."
Hatton's only serious challenge for the lead came on the
twelfth lap when he hooked a large rut in turn two and lost momentum. Maxson drove off the
second turn and was poised to make a challenge when the yellow flag flew for stalled car
of Randy Fiscus, Madison, WI. On the ensuing re-start, Hatton's Wilke PAK Ellis / Gaerte
powered away from Maxson and the field.
"He hooked something coming off two, the car went into
a fishtail, he banged off the guardrail, I pulled up next to him." Maxson explained,
"running on a track like the one we had tonight is a lot like a motocross
where you see guys gain and lose in big chunks. A lot depended on how you hit the
ruts."
Maxson held on to second position until lap 17 when he was
passed by Doug Schenck. Two laps later, Jerry Coons Jr., Tuscon, AZ moved around Maxson
for third. Coons, Jr., who was the nights fast qualifier in his #V4 McNultey owned
Outhouse / Esslinger, started the event from outside the sixth row. Coons, Jr. passed
Schenck after the two bumped in turn four of lap 21. Coons made up ground on Hatton, but
was still several car lengths behind at the checkered.
"When I got into second I couldn't see him at
all." Coons Jr. said after the race. "and as he got into lapped traffic I could
see him, but I was looking at the scoreboard and I realized that there was no way I'd be
able to make up that much track in that many laps, I knew that I'd have to settle for
second."
Schenck, who recorded his highest finish of the season at
Angell Park Speedway, gave a great deal of credit for the success to his Scat V-4 motor.
"The Scat is definitely helpful with a heavy track. The motor has so much torque that
on a slick track it has a tendency to burn the tires right off, but a heavy track like
this really helps."
