SUN PRAIRIE, WI (August 30, 1998) Kevin Doty held off the late race challenge of Dan
Boorse and powered away from the field during the 25 lap Summer Sizzler Badger Midget Auto
Racing Association A-Feature at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie Sunday night. The
win is Doty's second in BMARA competition this season.
By virtue of the second place finish, Boorse mathematically sealed his fifth BMARA
points championship. The 1998 championship, the fifth in his career, ties Boorse with
Kevin Olson (Machesney Park, IL) but is still three titles behind all time BMARA leader,
Billy Wood, who won eight championships between 1954 - 1968.
The feature event got off to a ragged start as the front row cars of Aaron Fiscus
(Madison, WI) and pole-sitter Roger Corrigan (Loves Park, IL) broke formation in the third
turn. As the two drivers entered turn four Fiscus picked up the pace on the outside and
Corrigan lagged behind on the inside. Fiscus and the entire outside row of cars broke out
to a three-car length advantage as the green flag waved to start the event. Corrigan later
said that he expected a re-start.
As Fiscus completed the first lap the cars of Bill Berg (Arlington, IL), and Randy Koch
got together exiting turn three and flipped in turn four. The cars of Corrigan and Rob
Keelan (Milwaukee, WI) were also collected in the event. None of the drivers were
seriously hurt in the incident.
Two laps after the restart Doty moved by Fiscus on the bottom of turn four. Boorse also
moved by Fiscus in turns one and two of lap three but was never a serious threat to Doty.
"Aaron was trying to run it high all the way around and I kind of though that on
that re-start that he'd go low in three and four because he usually runs fast off the
bottom but he stayed up high." Doty said from victory lane. "I kind of thought
that the track might be faster on the bottom all the way around but it turned out to be
faster on the bottom of three and four and up high in turn one and two."
As Doty pulled out to a 10 car length lead in the mid stages of the race a late caution
presented Boorse's only real chance to take the lead.
1998 points champion, Boorse said, "The last restart gave us a slim shot, but the
groove was low in three and four so I figured he'd go low and I knew that's where I had to
be too. He would have had to make a big mistake but I'm happy to get second and win a
fifth points championship."
The Summer Sizzler was the kick-off to one of the busiest weeks of the season for the
BMARA teams. Several BMARA competitors are expected to make the pull to Terre Haute,
Indiana for the "Hut 100" this Wednesday night to be aired live on ESPN-2.
Coverage is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. central time. From there the drivers make
their way to Hales Corners, Wisconsin for the Friday night "Back to School"
special event. Sunday night it's back to Angell Park for the 17th annual Pepsi
Nationals. Five previous Pepsi Nationals champions including Doty, Olson, Boorse, Marty
Davis and Randy Koch are expected to compete.
