Sun Prairie,Wis., May 30-Defending Series champion Scott Hatton won a classic battle with former series champions Dan Boorse, and Davey Ray to capture the 50-lap Badger Midget Series Feature Monday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The event was delayed 24 hours due to heavy rain on Sunday.
Harley Slotten led the first two laps before Ray moved in front. On the sixth lap Hatton moved into third from ninth starting position while Boorse moved into the top five two laps later after starting in 14th place. Ray began lapping the tail of the field on the 10th circuit and set a blistering pace the next ten laps cutting through lap traffic maintaining a two second advantage over Hatton.
At the mid way point Ray had lapped up to the eleventh place car, and began to see Hatton narrowing his advantage. When Aaron Fiscus stalled on the 32nd lap, only six cars remained on the lead lap. On the restart Ray, and Hatton waged a fierce battle for the lead with Ray holding the advantage. Boorse moved into third on the 35th lap, and using the bottom groove closed on Ray,and Hatton who were running the high groove.
With ten laps remaining three car lengths separated the trio. Boorse moved into second on the 42nd lap, but two laps later Hatton was even at the line with Ray for the lead, and took the advantage entering turn one. Boorse passed Ray for second two laps later, however trailed Hatton for the second straight week at the finish by two car lengths. Ray extended his series point lead finishing third one car length behind Boorse. Danny Stratton, and fast qualifier Brad Kuhn completed the top five.
Ray holds a 74 point lead over Stratton heading into the June 3-4 Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Championship at the Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway.
