By Bryan Gapinski Beaver Dam, Wis., May 3---Mike Hess passed teammate David Gough with eight laps remaining to win Round One of Duel at the Dam, 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Saturday Night at Charter Raceway Park.
A six car accident occurred on the second lap of the feature with Nick Lundgreen and fast qualifier Bubba Altig flipping escaping injury. Gough led the field on the restart while Michael Pickens moved into second position, one lap later. Pickens closed to the rear bumper of Gough on the ninth lap, with Hess trailing by an additional two car lengths.
At the midway point Gough, Hess and Pickens were separated by less than three car lengths. With the trio running the high side of a narrow cushion, several attempts were made to gain the lead from Gough by both Pickens and Hess, six unofficial lead changes occurred during the seven lap period, with Gough regaining the lead each time before crossing the start/finish line.
Hess made the winning pass entering turn three on the 21st lap and pulled away from the field. Two cautions for minor spins, including one involving Pickens occurred between laps 25-26. Hess driving the Jerry Hardy owned Buzzard/Chevrolet by Hawk#4, finished 1.91 seconds ahead of Gough, Chad DeSelle, Joe Wipperfurth and Tim Noble.
Aaron Fiscus holds a nine point lead over Dave Darland heading into the May 18 event at Angell Park Speedway (Sun Prairie, Wis.).
