Ray Romps At Prairie
Sun Prairie, Wis., May 15, 2005-In dominating form, Davey Ray captured the 50-lap Badger Midget Series Feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. Ray led all but the opening three circuits driving the RAJO-Wilke Racing Stealth/Sesco-Mopar entry.
Ray passed three cars on the opening lap to move into second behind leader Brandon Waelti. Two laps later Ray made the pass for the lead, at the same time fast qualifier Jerry Coons Jr., moved into fifth position. The field was bunched up on the ninth lap, when a car stalled on the track. On the restart Ray quickly pulled away from the field, and within five laps held a three second lead on Coons. Ray began lapping the tail of the field three laps later.
Ray's lead was erased when another car stalled on the track on the 26th lap. On the restart Ray used lapped cars between himself and Coons to pull away from the pack. Coons, Dan Boorse, and Waelti, waged a great battle for second place over the final 20 laps while Ray increased his margin each lap running through heavy lapped traffic.
Ray, finished 7.28 seconds ahead of Boorse, followed by Waelti, Coons, and Brad Kuhn. In qualifying Coons set fast time, by turning the second fastest lap in track history. Rookie driver Nick Sommerfield escaped injury in a wild flip during practice. Ray holds a 34 point lead over Waelti heading into the May 22 event at the track.
