Hatton Tops Angell Park
Sun Prairie,Wi., May 22, 2005-Defending series champion Scott Hatton got his season back on track with a dominating performance Sunday Night capturing the 25-lap Badger Midget Series feature at Angell Park Speedway.
Chad DeSelle jumped into the lead at the start, and paced the initial five laps, before being passed by Dan Boorse. Hatton who started tenth after setting fast time moved into fifth on the sixth lap, and gained fourth position two laps later.
With Boorse leading, Hatton passed DeSelle for third on the ninth lap, and on the next circuit passed Ray for second. Boorse entered heavy lapped traffic on the 11th lap, and was passed by Hatton for the lead after being blocked by slower cars, allowing Hatton to take the lead exiting turn four.
The events only caution appeared for a stalled car on the 12th lap. On the restart Hatton pulled away from the field while Boorse and Ray waged an intense battle for second. With five laps remaining Hatton began lapping the tail of the field but maintained his three second-plus lead over Boorse.
On the final lap and a half with several lapped cars running different grooves the runner-up position changed hands three times before Boorse gained second place exiting turn four. Hatton finished 3.31 seconds ahead of Boorse, Dave Darland, Ray, and Brad Kuhn.
Ray holds a 69 point lead over Brandon Waelti heading into the 50-lap event at the track on May 29. Harley Slotten escaped injury in a spectacular flip during the second heat race, which saw him clear the second turn wall, and fence landing outside the track in the adjacent parking area.
