Winless Streaks End With Waelti Victory
Sun Prairie,Wis., June 12, 2005-Brandon Waelti scored his first feature victory in nearly three years, capturing the 25-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The win also ended a 29-feature race winless streak for Wisconsin drivers in the series.
Chad DeSelle jumped into the lead at the start. On the third lap Danny Stratton running second got sideways, slowing up the field behind him causing a chain reaction accident which saw Scott Hatton flip. Hatton was uninjured. Stratton, and series point leader Davey Ray restarted at the tail of the field.
Kevin Doty who started eighth moved past DeSelle for the lead on the sixth lap,and began stretching his lead. Two laps later Jason Dull spun in turn four, as the caution came out Doty slowed to miss Dull's car stalling his car on the cushion of the track. Doty restarted at the tail of the field in 18th position.
On the restart Nick Lundgreen passed DeSelle for the lead, with Ray moving into sixth place. At the mid-way point Lundgreen led Brad Kuhn, Waelti, and Ray with Doty in seventh position.
Waelti closed on Lundgreen several times with Ray trailing by a car length. Entering turn one on the 19th lap Waelti moved under Lundgreen for the lead, while Doty moved into fourth place. Waelti spent the final three laps in heavy traffic, and finished two car lengths ahead of Lundgreen, Ray, Doty, and Stratton.
Waelti driving the Waelti/Schulenberg owned Stealth-Mopar entry became the first Wisconsin driver to win a feature in the series since Aaron Fiscus on July 20, 2003. Seven-time series champion Dan Boorse escaped injury in a series of wild flips in practice. Ray holds a 64 point lead over Waelti heading into the June 18 event at Wilmot (Wis.) Speedway.
