Stratton Scores Last Lap Win At Angell Park
Sun Prairie, Wis., June 19, 2005-California's Danny Stratton used a last lap pass to win the 25-lap Badger Midget Series feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. Stratton survived six restarts in the event, four due to red flags involving flipped cars.
After a Kenny Adams opening lap flip caused a complete restart, Aaron Fiscus jumped into the lead closely followed by Stratton. Fiscus paced the initial six laps before Stratton moved in front, at the same time third place Jerry Coons Jr. retired with mechanical problems. The field was bunched up after a caution on lap nine for a three car accident.
Scott Hatton moved into second on the 10th lap, two laps later Craig Carey flipped violently down the front stretch, escaping injury. On each restart Stratton pulled away from the field, only to see Hatton close on his lead after a few laps, with current point leader Davey Ray a close third. Rick Mueller, and Mike Hess escaped injury in separate flips on laps 18,and 21 of the event.
Stratton again got a nice jump on the field on the restart with four laps remaining. On the 23rd lap Hatton pulled even with Stratton exiting turn two,and took the lead entering turn three. Hatton took the white flag as the leader, but drifted over the cushion in turn two, allowing Stratton, and Ray to pass him. Over the final half lap Stratton held his line and finished one car length ahead of Ray with Hatton an additional car length behind in third place. Chad DeSelle, and Brandon Waelti completed the top five.
For Stratton who drove the Hans Lein owned Spike-Esslinger #2 entry it was his first career feature win at the facility. Ray holds a 39 point lead over Waelti heading into the June 26 event at the track.
