Kuhn opens title defense with Angell Park victory
By Bryan Gapinski, Sun Prairie, Wis., May 20, 2007---Defending series champion Brad Kuhn won the season opening Badger Midget Series feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The event kicked off the 71st year of sanctioning midget auto racing for the organization, oldest in the country.
Aaron Fiscus jumped into the lead at the start of the feature, and held a three car length lead when the first caution appeared on lap seven for a stalled car. Kuhn moved into second place on the tenth lap, when third place running Scott Hatton stopped on the track. Kuhn shadowed Fiscus on the restart taking the lead as the pair exited turn four on the 13th lap.
Kuhn held a near three-second lead at the midway point and began lapping slower cars. Fiscus maintained second place as five cars fought a tight battle for second place. Doug Schenck escaped injury on the 31st lap flipping after hitting the backstretch wall. Third place running A.J. Fike stalled the following lap. On the restart Michael Pickens running in the top five made contact with another flipping violently into the first turn catch fence.
On the restart former series champion Davey Ray running third jumped the cushion and flipped. Due to curfew regulations the event was not restarted with Kuhn driving the Michael Quin Stealth/Mopar#43NZ being awarded the victory. Fiscus, Brad Loyet, Danny Stratton and Mike Hess completed the top five, with only half of the starting field of 22 cars finishing the scheduled 50-lap event. Another 50-lap event is scheduled for Sunday May 27 at Angell Park Speedway, with the following day as a raindate.
