Ray Tops Angell Park
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wi., July 1, 2007--Former series champion Davey Ray captured the 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway.
Nick Lundgreen quickly moved into the lead, and paced the first two laps before the caution appeared. On the restart Lundgreen again led the field, over second year driver Matt Smith, and Brady Bacon. Lundgreen held a two-car length over Smith, on the tenth lap when he began lapping the tail of the field. Only five car lengths separated the top five positions.
The next six laps saw Lundgreen cut through the field lapping up to eleventh position, when the caution appeared for a stalled car. On the restart Ray ran on Lundgreen's rear bumper for the first lap and a half before pulling off the winning pass entering turn 3.
One lap later Doug Schenck, escaped injury flipping on the front stretch.
Ray pulled away from the tightly bunched field on the restart, however with seven laps remaining the red flag appeared for a fire on Bacon's car. The final seven laps saw Ray driving the Dan Mecum owned Mecum Enterprises Spike/Chevrolet by Hawk entry increase his lead each lap finishing 1.86 seconds ahead of Lundgreen, Mike Hess, Smith who scored a career best feature finish of fourth, and series point leader Brad Kuhn.
Kuhn holds a 141 point lead over Ray heading into the first ever midget race event at Langlade County Speedway (Antigo,Wis.) on Saturday Night July 7, before returning to Angell Park on July 8.
Feature Lap Leaders: Lundgreen 1-17, Ray 18-30.
*Schenck flipped on lap 18 of feature.
