Coons captures third Badger Midget win
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie,Wis., July 8--Jerry Coons Jr. captured his third Badger Midget Series feature victory of the season Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway.
At the start Scott Hatton quickly moved from seventh place to take the lead from Matt Smith at the completition of the second lap. Two laps later Hatton led Davey Ray, Brad Kuhn and Coons. The four pulled away from the field, until the events only caution appeared on lap 9 when Nick Lundgreen stalled on the track.
On the restart Ray moved around Hatton for the lead entering the first turn, later in the lap Coons took second place from Hatton. At the mid way point three car lengths separted Ray, Coons and Kuhn. Using the lower groove Coons pulled even with Ray on the 17th lap entering turn two,and took the lead down the backstretch.
Coons spent the final ten laps in heavy lapped traffic but increased his lead each lap, while Kuhn moved into second place, with six laps remaining. Coons driving the Ralph Wilke owned Spike/Mopar#5 finishes 2.68 seconds ahead of series points leader Kuhn, followed by Ray, Hatton and Ryan Durst.
Kuhn holds a point lead over Ray heading into the July 14 event at Charter Raceway (Beaver Dam, Wis.), before returning to Angell Park Speedway on July 15.
