Kuhn notches fifth Badger victory
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wis., July 15, 2007---Defending series champion Brad Kuhn extended his series points lead by capturing the 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway.
Brandon Waelti paced the opening lap, before Ryan Durst took the top position one lap later. At the same time Brandon Wagner and Joe Wipperfurth both flipped down the front stretch several times, escaping injury. On the restart Durst quickly pulled away from the field increasing his lead each lap. Behind Durst, positions second through fifth changed several times over the next few laps. Durst held a full straightway lead on second place, when Rob Keelan stopped on the track with a flat tire on the 12th lap.
On the restart Durst was challenged by Doug Schenck. Schenck led the event's 14th lap. One lap later Durst repassed Schenck for the lead with Kuhn taking over the second position. Kuhn powered off the second turn on the 16th lap and drove under Durst for the lead. Justin Allgaier took over second place three laps later.
Two cautions appeared for stalled cars on the 21st and 22nd laps. During the second caution, Allgaier retired with engine problems. On the restart Kuhn's car which began smoking, quickly moved away from the field. Fourth place Danny Stratton stopped on the track with three laps remaining. Setting up a three-lap showdown between Kuhn and Mike Hess who the series event the previous evening at Charter Raceway Park (Beaver Dm, Wis.).
On the restart Kuhn driving the Michael Quin owned Stealth-Mopar ran his fastest laps of the race and finished 2.6 second ahead of Hess for his fifth feature victory of the season. Schenck, Scott Hatton and Waelti completed the top five. Kuhn holds a 174 point lead over Davey Ray heading into the July 22 event at Angell Park Speedway.
Lap Leaders: Waelti 1, Durst 2-13, Schenck 14, Durst 15-16, Kuhn 17-30.
