Kuhn takes advantage of Coons misfortune for sixth Badger Midget win
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wis., July 22---Brad Kuhn led the final three laps to win the 30-lap Badger Midget Series Feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway.
Nick Lundgreen jumped into the lead at the start, while Jerry Coons Jr. passed four cars on the opening lap, moving into second place. One lap later Coons passed Lundgreen for the lead, with Kuhn moving into third place after starting in seventh position. Kuhn took over the runner-up position from Lundgreen on the third lap.
Coons and Kuhn pulled away from the field. Coons began lapping the tail of the field on the 12th lap, while Kuhn closed to Coons rear bumper. Coons saw his two second lead erased on the 18th lap when Michael Pickens stalled. On the restart Coons and Kuhn again pulled away from the field. The events final caution came out three laps later for a spun car.
During the caution Coons' car began smoking on the restart Coons again held his advantage over Kuhn. With five laps remaining Coons' car began smoking more heavily. Exiting turn four on the 27th lap, Coons suffered engine failure coasting into the pits, giving Kuhn the lead.
Kuhn driving the Michael Quin/Quin Buildings/Stealth-Mopar finished 1.23 seconds ahead of fast qualifier Scott Hatton for his sixth series feature victory of the season. Justin Allgaier, Davey Ray and Brandon Waelti completed the top five, which saw only two fail to finish the feature event. Kuhn holds a 195 point lead over Scott Hatton heading into the next series event on July 29 at Angell Park Speedway.
Feature Lap Leaders: Lundgreen 1-2, Coons 3-27, Kuhn 28-30.
