Badger Midget Win Increases Hess Points Lead
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wis., July 6, 2008---Mike Hess extended his series points lead by capturing the 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. It was his second series feature victory of the season.
Joe Wipperfurth moved into the lead at the start, while fast qualifier Jerry Coons Jr. quickly moved from tenth starting position into second place by the completion of lap 4. Wipperfurth held off Coons until four laps later when Coons took the lead on the backstretch.
Two caution flags appeared for stalled cars on lap 13 and 15. On the restart Coons's engine began to misfire, but continued his lead over a tightly group field of cars, with Hess running in fourth position. On lap 21 exiting Turn 2, Coons' car lost power coming to a stop, causing a caution.
Davey Ray assumed the lead on the restart, but led a half-lap before slowing causing another caution, giving the lead to Hess on the restart. Hess driving the Jerry Hardy owned Buzzard/Hawk Chevrolet#4 went unchallenged the final nine laps finishing 1.28 seconds ahead of Brandon Waelti, Scott Hatton, Wipperfurth and Aaron Fiscus.
Hess holds a 59 point lead over Coons heading into the upcoming doubleheader weekend. Saturday July 12 will be the final appearance of the season at Charter Raceway (Beaver Dam,Wis.), with July 13 at Angell Park highlighted by a 50-lap feature.
