Hess increases Badger points lead with Angell Park win
By Bryan Gapinskim Sun Prairie, Wis., July 20, 2008---Mike Hess increased his series points lead by capturing the 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The victory was his third of the season, in Badger competition.
Aaron Fiscus took the lead at the start, while Hess passed three cars in the opening lap advancing to fourth place. On the second lap a four car accident blocked the track forcing the event to be stopped. The restart saw Hess improve his position each lap, closing to Fiscus's rear bumper on lap 5.
Hess passed Fiscus for the lead on the backstretch on the next lap, and within three laps held a five-car advantage. A stalled car brought out the caution flagon lap 10. On the restart fast qualifier Michael Pickens moved into second place. Hess and Pickens both running on the cushion quickly pulled away from the field. Hess maintained a two-car length lead as the pair began lapping slower cars on lap 22.
Hess and Pickens held a straightaway lead over third place, when Pickens slowed and retired from the event with three laps remaining. Hess appeared headed for an easy victory when Bryon Walters hit the backstretch wall and flipped several times on lap 28. The two-lap shootout saw Hess take advantage of two lapped cars between himself and second place Scott Hatton on the restart.
Hess driving the Jerry Hardy owned Buzzard/Hawk Chevrolet#4 finished two-car lengths ahead of Hatton at the finish. Bubba Atig, Robbie Ray, and Brandon Waelti completed the top five. Hess currently leads Waelti by 133 points heading into the Aug. 3 event at Angell Park.
Feature Lap Leaders: Fiscus 1-5, Hess 6-30.
*Walters flipped on lap 28 of feature, uninjured.
