Coons scores Badger Win #3 at Angell Park
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wis., August 16, 2009---Jerry Coons Jr.took advantage of lapped traffic to win the 25-lap Badger Midget Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The victory was third of the season for Coons at the track.
Coons who earlier in the night set fast time, passed five cars in the first two laps. One lap later Brad Kuhn advanced to third place after starting eighth, with Coons improving another position. Mike Hess continued to increase his lead over Scott Hatton. On lap 6 both Kuhn and Coons passed Hatton. Hess began lapping slower cars, two circuits later, while Kuhn and Coons closed to within a car length of Hess at the completion of ten laps. Coons passed Kuhn with the aid of a lapped car to take over second place on lap 11.
Coons then passed Hess for the lead as the pair crossed the start/finish line to complete lap 15. Hess and Kuhn made contact battling for second place three laps later, forcing Hess to spin and Kuhn to retire from the event. One the restart Coons used a lap car between himself and Hatton to quickly build an advantage on the restart. Coons driving the Ralph Wilke owned Spike/Toyota No. 5 finished 3.23 seconds ahead of series points leader Hatton, Brad Loyet, Brandon Waelti, and Bubba Altig. Hess recovered to finish sixth.
At the start of the third heat race, Chad DeSelle made contact with another car causing him to execute a series of flips which saw his car clear the top of the fence betweens Turn 1 and 2. DeSelle's car landed outside the track between the two fences by the pavilion entrance to the track in Turn 2. DeSelle was transported to University Hospital (Madison) for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Hatton holds a 172 point cushion over both Hess and Loyet heading into the 50-lap Cornfest Midget Classic at Angell Park Speedway on Sunday Aug. 23.
