Hatton increases points lead with Dodge County victory
By Bryan Gapinski Beaver Dam, Wis. Sept. 4, 2009--Scott Hatton increased his series points lead Friday Night winning the 3rd annual Stan Fox Memorial 20-lap Badger Midget Series feature at Dodge County Fairgrounds.
Hatton jumped into the lead at the start, and quickly moved to a half straightaway lead, when the caution appeared for a stalled car. On the restart Shane Hmeil hit the wall and flipped, escaping injury. Hatton pulled away from second place Brad Loyet, and held a one second lead at the midway point. A torrid battle for third place between the cars of Josh Wise, Bryan Clauson, Tracy Hines, and Brad Kuhn drew the attention of the near-sellout crowd, with Hatton increasing his lead.
Hatton's advantage increased to over two seconds, when he began lapping slower cars with four laps remaining. Kuhn using the high groove broke free of the pack of cars, and moved pass Loyet for second place lap with two laps remaining. Hatton driving the Huston Solution owned Stealth/Mopar No. 15 finished 2.69 seconds ahead of Kuhn, Loyet, Wise and fast qualifier Clauson.
Jerry Coons Jr., who turned laps in practice under the existing track record, escaped injury after a wild series of flips entering Turn 1 during qualifying. Hatton now hold a 151-point lead over Hess with two events remaining.
